Subway Prophet

…and the words of the prophets were written on the subway walls…

And about that…

So, me and blogging, not a good combination actually it seems. I have a lot of respect for people who journal. I admire their discipline of regularly recording their thoughts and memories. I have heard that journalling helps to activate the creative side of your brain as well as helps you remember things. I always thought that it would be cool to look back on a journal and see what I was thinking at certain times and be able to chart the progression of my ideas.

Then again there is also the arrogance of journaling, and in a larger sense blogging because at the end of journaling, the product is a record of your life which, one assumes is interesting enough for other people to read for entertainment or if you are important enough, education. I like reading journals. I love the quote from John Wesley’s journal (one of many) that his heart was strangely warmed.
As one can see from my previous posts, I definitely lack the discipline of regularly recording my thoughts. I could spin that as humility and say that I don’t want to promote myself, however, this would be a lie, and an attempt to not be “that guy.” So, one might ask “Well Drew, why are you doing yet another blog entry.” That is a good question. And one which has a few answers. The first is that Dr. Hauerwas told me to. Alright, not literally, but after reading his memoir, Hannah’s Child, he reminded me that I, like him, process information by writing, and so I think as I begin school at Duke in the fall, I should have an outlet for processing the information and the experiences of Seminary. The second is that I have something to say. I think that everyone has something to say. I am certainly not an exception, nor do I have a majority of the answers, but I am convinced that God has called me to preach the gospel, which means that I need to have something to say. So that is what this blog will be. It will be me processing information, not final answers. It will be me recording information and parts of my life. And, it will hopefully be meaningful for someone, even if it is only myself. If one of those things happen then I will consider it a success.
