A Prayer on June 30, 2019

God of Freedom and Justice,

We give you thanks this morning for for the warmth of the sun, the cool of the breeze, the crash of the waves. We give you thanks for the beauty of this area that so many come to visit and that we get to call home. We pray for those who are tourists that they may find rest and peace during their vacation. We pray for the local businesses that they may be able to provide the services and relationships that make this community special.

On this week when we will celebrate the birthday of our country, we pray for our leaders. For President Trump as he is currently in Asia that you would help him to promote peace and the prospering not just of our country, but of your world. We pray for our congressional leaders and judges that they would lead, legislate and rule based not on their own interests, or those of their particular party, but instead with a bias toward justice and the care for the poor and marginalized who are close to your heart.

Help our country be one that lives up to its own aspiration that all people are created equal so that each may have access to life, liberty, and the opportunity to pursue happiness free from barriers and discrimination.

In our political discourse we hear many stories about immigrants and those who are seeking asylum in our country. Help us not to reduce their stories into talking points that further our support or criticism of this administration. But instead help us to see our brothers and sisters caught in webs of brokenness that are beyond their control. We pray especially for the children at the border who are suffering based on choices they did not make.

Help those who write our laws and those who enforce them do so with a care and compassion that is consistent with your will for country, so that our nation may be the city on a hill and light in the darkness that our forefathers once dreamt we could be.

Help us to be a congregation that is an outpost of your Kingdom in this earth, that our witness may reform our community and nation for your glory and honor as we pray together the prayer your son taught us to pray saying…
